A Future In Coffee? (Part II)

Last week I talked about my job interview at a coffeehouse (A Future in Coffee?). And today was the day. After these last days with the horrible boss I considered quitting if today would go well. (Not immediately, though, but maybe after the first two weeks or so.)

I met a few of my (potential) future colleagues. I was introduced into the store’s work processes. I made my first Caffè Latte, Latte Macchiato, and Cappuccino. I learned a lot about coffee. I already forgot most of it again. But they told me I would. No worries.

Everyone was so nice. Everyone laughed about my initial fear of (or respect for) the milk steamer. They didn’t laugh at me (what the horrible boss would do), but they laughed with me. One colleague was ‘in charge of me’ and showed me everything. He taught me a lot. And he assured me that I would learn everything (again) during my first weeks of training–in case I should accept the job. Because it would be natural to forget most of what I learned today.

The store manager occasionally stopped by and checked on my progress. She seemed to be pleased. We joked a bit. I felt very welcome. The team was very likable. The atmosphere was relaxed. Colleagues joked around–sometimes bawdily, but always respectfully. I love bawdy jokes!

After two hours, the store manager asked me to sit with her. If I want to sleep on it? They would love to have me on the team.

I originally had planned to sleep on it. But after the last few days with the horrible boss and after these two hours with such nice people, I decided that accepting the job was the right choice. Not as a permanent solution. But for now it is.

Plus: I won’t have to prepare for this work. Think about my work when I’m not working. I will have more time to seriously focus on applications in academia.
